Power Line Carrier Technology

For automatic operation and load management, the generator relies on an Automatic Transfer Switch and Load Management Modules. In many systems, the load management modules and the automatic transfer switch require communication wiring.

Champion Power Line Carrier technology eliminates the extra communication wiring by using the home’s existing wiring.

For example, a Load Management Module (LMM) controls the air conditioner by turning power to the unit on or off. If load management must shut the air conditioner off, it sends a signal to the air conditioner’s LMM, which disconnects the air conditioner’s power. Another signal turns the module on and reconnects power to enable the air conditioner.

Communication with the Automatic Transfer Switch is another essential part of the standby generator system. The automatic transfer switch can detect a power outage and signal the generator to start. When the generator is ready, it signals the automatic transfer switch to transfer the load from the utility lines to the generator.

Managing all the communication through the home’s existing wiring saves time and materials at installation, which lowers installation costs.

Power Management

Power Management allows a smaller generator to do the job usually assigned to larger, more expensive generators that typically use more fuel. It’s a way of managing power so that your most important or critical needs get the power they need. By prioritizing the heavy loads, the generator and automatic transfer switch can prevent overloads while allowing the most essential loads to run when needed.

Sometimes, it means that a less important load waits for an essential or critical load to finish. Power management can also lock out loads that should never run while on generator power; exceptionally heavy loads like baseboard heating or electric tankless water heaters are just two examples.

Champion generator systems can manage and prioritize up to four heavy loads including air conditioners, water heaters, electric dryers, and electric ranges.

200-Amp Automatic Transfer Switch

Standby generator systems require an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). A Whole House Transfer switch controls the source of power for the entire home. The installer connects the switch between the electric utility’s meter and the main circuit breaker panel.

During normal operation, the utility supplies power to the home through the ATS. If an outage hits, the transfer switch signals the generator to start. Once the generator is ready, the ATS disconnects the Utility first, then it connects the generator. Typical time from outage to power restoration is about 20 to 30 seconds.

After installation, a teaching mode enables the transfer switch to learn about the power requirements of your managed loads so it can effectively manage them.

The Champion ETL Listed ATS 200-Amp Automatic Transfer Switch with aXis technology has a NEMA-3R rating for both indoor and outdoor installations.

Rated at 200-Amps, the transfer switch is readily compatible with all 200-Amp service installations in the United States. Norwall also has the Champion 22kW with 150-Amp ATS and the Champion 22kW with 100 Amp ATS. Check with your utility and local code authority.

aXis Controller

All standby generators have a controller that lies at the heart of the standby generator system. The controler performs checks on the generator and if ncessary,  can shut it down to prevent damage. For instance, a low oil condition could damage the generator engine, so the aXis controller shuts down the generator before that happens. It also regulates engine speed, frequency, and voltage.

Champion’s aXis controller features a 4-inch color display. aXis provides the support necessary for Power Line Carrier Technology which communicates with the generator’s peripherals like the automatic transfer switch and the load management modules. The controller also provides a separate Wi-Fi network that the installer can use to program the generator with a laptop, smart phone, or tablet. Fast and easy Wi-Fi setup lowers installation costs and saves you money.

Advanced Aluminum Enclosure

A lot of thought went into the Champion 22kW enclosure design. It’s made of aluminum for all weather conditions and resistance to corrosion with a pleasing color and aesthetic design. The gull-wing doors provide exceptional access for maintenance and service.

An advanced air-flow design incorporates 3 points for air flow on the sides and back to keep the alternator and engine cooler for longer life. Champion built sound dampening into the enclosure. Combined with a specially designed low-ton muffler, this generator keeps the noise down to 67 dBA at 21 feet—low enough that people nearby won’t have to raise their voices to hear each other.

Fuel Efficient Engine Design

The Champion 22kW is up to 20 percent more fuel efficient that competing generators. At rated load, it uses 3.6 gallons per hour of propane and 270 cubit feet per hour when running on natural gas. The rated load is 22kW on propane and 19.8kW on natural gas.

  Propane Natural Gas
Rated Watts 22,000 19800
Rated Amps (120 Volts) 183.4 165.0
Rated Amps (240 Volts) 91.7 82.5
Half Load Fuel Consumption  2.0 Gallons per Hour 173.4 Cubic Feet per Hour
FullLoad Fuel Consumption 3.6 Gallons per Hour 270 Cubic Feet per Hour

Champion’s 999cc V-Twin Engine powers the 22kW generator. It operates at 3600 RPM, uses either natural gas or propane, and 5W-30 Full synthetic oil. Oil sensors monitor the oil level and the aXis controller shuts down the generator if the oil level drops below the minimum for safe operation.

With a 24-Volt starting system, the generator starts and runs in temperatures below -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it runs on natural gas or propane, the generator never needs refueling.

Fully automatic without manual intervention of any kind, this generator provides peace of mine 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether you are at home, at work, or on vacation. Expect 5% Total Harmonic Distortion from the Champion—safe power for electronics, appliances, and tools.

Available for sale in all 50 states, this generator meets strict air quality standards throughout the country.
