Buyer Guide: What Size Generator Do I Need?
Briggs and Stratton Home Standby Generators
Norwall carries Briggs and Stratton home standby generators with or without an automatic transfer switch (ATS). The required transfer switch permanently connects the generator to your home’s electrical system. It selects utility power for normal operation and generator power during an outage and isolates the two power sources.
A whole-house ATS allows the generator to power your entire home and installs between the electric utility meter and the main service panel. The switch carries a service entrance rating and may serve as the main disconnect. Briggs and Stratton Service Entrance rated transfer switches include 200-Amp, 150-Amp, and 100-Amp switches. The ATS current rating (amps or amperes) must equal or exceed your service equipment rating. If you have a 150-Amp main breaker, you can use either a 200-Amp switch or a 150-Amp switch, but not a 100-Amp switch.
The whole house ATS from Briggs and Stratton includes Symphony II Power Management to manage multiple air conditioners directly and other heavy users of electrical power with optional Add-On Power Modules.
Buyer Guide to Automatic Transfer Switches
A second option, the 100-Amp Load Center (LC) Automatic Transfer Switch, powers up to 16 pre-selected circuits. During normal operation, the transfer switch supplies the circuits with power from utility. During an outage, the generator supplies power to the same circuits, but other circuits in the main panel do not have power.
