According to Wikipedia Alternative Energy is an “umbrella” term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels.
The word “alternative” is almost a misrepresentation, conjuring up the idea of something more environmental friendly and possibly even less expensive to use than the fuel source currently in place, like the big bad electric company.
When alternative simply means there is another choice or possibility. And there are many other choices or possibilities…Wind, Solar, Hydro, Biomass, Geothermal. Most of these other fuel sources are not practical for individual use, they are for industrial or large scale applications or aren’t cost effective enough to offset the initial set up to be financially practical…
And this is where all of the environmentalist will jump ahead to submit their comments…
What I mean to say is that you won’t be able to recuperate the initial cost of the system with the savings accumulation in most situations.
Does alternative energy automatically mean it is renewable energy? No… Renewable energy is from natural sources, such as the sun, water, or wind. These resources are available everywhere and are perfect for isolated, remote areas, even on a large scale. Individuals in residential areas may discover that renewable energy is a great way to subsidize their energy needs. A small scale solar system for just the hot water heater or some other specific appliance at the home like the pool heater, spa or clothes dryer could get you energy savings almost immediately.

Choosing this topic for our blog was not accidental. I wanted to find a way to introduce Generac Power Systems newest innovation, the EcoGen standby generator. EcoGen was designed and manufactured specifically to work with renewable energy applications and is capable of tying into an inverter and battery storage system. Propane fueled the EcoGen provides the cleanest running, low emission standby power for your off-grid alternative energy application.
